Self-drive tips in Uganda

Self-drive is a perfect option for those who would like to enjoy an adventurous trip with privacy and lots of flexibility and are looking to travel around Uganda on a budget. You are in a position to pull over anywhere, change plans as you see fit, and have full control over your itinerary! However, great flexibility comes with great responsibility, so you will be responsible for whatever happens on the road. Therefore, here we provide a few tips to help you consider whether to take a self-drive or rent a car with a driver.

  1. Rent a four-wheel-drive

Although traveling along great asphalted main roads can be interesting, a turn towards the smaller roads where the real adventure starts can be challenging. The dirt roads can get extremely bumpy, and you don’t want to get stuck in a ditch in the middle of a national park. So renting a 4×4 will save you from incurring extra costs for pulling you out of a ditch.

  1. Opt for a car with a roof tent.

Renting a car with a roof tent is a perfect way to travel in Uganda on a budget, especially for those who would consider camping in a remote location. There are a number of campgrounds all over the country, ranging from basic bush campsites inside national parks to private campgrounds operated by lodge owners. These campsites give you a secure place to stay while enjoying the good amenities that come with hiring a roof tent car.

  1. Pack snacks and water.

Meals are usually a top priority for most travelers on a trip. However, once you stray off the main roads of Uganda and into the parks, you are most likely not to find shops that sell water or food. A great deal of time can pass in between meals if you don’t plan accordingly, so make sure you carry some hearty snacks along with you!

  1. Know the road rules.

Most companies usually provide some basic information when you rent their car or services. Make it a point to read some road rules before you sit in the car! Some of these rules may include:

  • Do not drive without a driver’s license in Uganda. A driver’s License is your permission from the road authorities to allow you to drive in Uganda.
  • Apply for a Ugandan driver’s license if you will be driving for more than 3 months.
  • Do Not Text and Drive. This wrong practice has been causing serious accidents and injuries, and therefore, it is illegal.
  • Having third-party insurance in Uganda is necessary and will be very helpful for your trip.
  • Wear seat belts at all times. It is mandatory to wear seatbelts whenever you are hitting the roads in Uganda and neighbouring countries.
  • Do not use an unlicensed vehicle.
  • Make sure you follow traffic signs and signals that are easy to spot and understand, especially if you use English as your first or second language.
  • Speed Limits. Speed limits should also be considered while driving in Uganda and neighbouring countries to avoid penalties and accidents. On highways in Uganda, the limit must be 100 km/h (62 mph); outside built-up areas, it should be 80 km/h (50 mph); and in urban built-up areas, the limit is 50 km/h (31 mph).
  • Do not drink and drive. You ought to be responsible for drinking alcohol, especially if you are going to drive. Driving under the influence of alcohol is punishable by a severe penalty in Uganda.
  1. Bring good camera equipment.

Self-drive offers you the opportunity to blend in and not be part of a bigger group of travelers, whether in cities, towns, or safari parks. We recommend carrying a good zoom lens on your trip. You will want to take amazing photos of the many attractions you will encounter along the way. Something up to 600mm would be your best bet, but those tend to cost a pretty penny!
